Need "thes" here or can they be without

Hi,

Please kndly correct the following:

1) Do I have to put "the" here?

a) in the two places indicated

b) Yesterday, I went to a funeral; there, (the) men ate on (the) one side and (the) women on the other.

2) And here,

Your explanatory note will be welcomed.

Here, "welcomed" or "welcome"?
