Homosexuals in Mali
In Mali, homosexuality has always been a taboo topic. According to the news, ninety-eight percent of Malian adults consider homosexuality as immoral behavior, and for them, this terrible thing should not be accepted in the society. Unfortunately, gays and lesbians experience a brutal discrimination in my country.
In Mali, a country that is ninety-five percent Muslims, homosexuals experience more prejudice than anyone. Because of religion and belief, Mali’s people consider homosexuality as a sin. According to the Malians marriage should be allowed only between a man and a woman and not between people of the same sex. If a family member becomes a gay or a lesbian, he or she is banished from the family and is considered as shameful. Homosexuality is wrong, and a homosexual is a disgusting person for Malians. For instance, when one is a homosexual in my country, one should never show it; otherwise he or she will be banished from the family. Homosexuals may definitely be put down and may undergo cruel and harsh punishment for their sexual orientation; as result, homosexual stay silent and do not reveal their sexuality in Mali.
Being called homosexual is an awful insult in my country. Therefore, homosexuals suffer from name-calling, discrimination from everyone and even whipping until dead. A gay man or woman endures a lot in Mali. He or she is pointed out everywhere and insulted by almost everyone. Some people beat them severely. As a matter of fact, they are sometimes killed because they do not have any defense facing a group of people enraged against them. For example, groups of homosexuals once were burned by a group of people in a small village in Mali. Mali’s laws do not recognize the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) rights; however, does that give the right to some to chastise others excruciatingly? Prejudice can be reasonable, but no one has the right to murder someone else because of his or her sexual orientation.
People against homosexuals have many arguments, and one of these arguments is that the word marriage is defined as a heterosexual relationship. Therefore, they consider “homosexual” is a contradicting word to that. Still, marriages or intimate relationships between same sexes look abnormal for some people, but does that give the right to them to kill innocent people for their desires and feelings? Should one person or a group of people be able to decide reasons for someone else’s death? Should people suffer from atrocities because of their sexual orientation? I am not a proponent of homosexuality, but I think homosexuals should not undergo all these injustices. I believe that the feeling is personal. Nobody has the right to kill another because of a difference. We all are different and have different thoughts, so no one can really feel what another does. We should be here to condemn homosexuality, but as an alternative we can guide them to the right direction. Punishing someone severely for his or her action is not always the good way to change him or her.
Homosexuals endure a lot of discrimination in Mali. They are denied the rights of other people. Because of religious beliefs, being a gay or lesbian is an insult and a terrible thing in my country. Malians prejudge homosexuals because they consider homosexuality as a sin, so they fight hard against it. It is sorrowful to judge someone by his or her sex orientation because no one on this earth can feel exactly what another does.
