In order to solve the traffic problems, governments should tax private car owners heavily and use the money to improve public transportation.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of such a solution?

It is true that a rise in road tax is considered as an effective measure to control gridlock issues. Although there are some drawbacks of increasing this tariff, I would argue that there are far more benefits.

On the one hand, there are several drawbacks of this solution. First, working adults are obliged to pay more on transportation. This is not only putting a heavy burden on them but also minimizing an amount of money for necessities such as living cost and education fees. For example, a taxi driver may not be able to afford this tax because of meager income so that he may lose his job. Second, there are alternative methods to control the traffic jams without exerting pressure on citizen. For example, city authorities should create dedicated bus lanes to encourage people to take public transport in the city.

On the other hand, I would argue that the above negative impacts are negated by highly benefits. First, people may not buy cars anymore. Instead, they use public transports such as bus and train because they cost less. As a result, this solution can ease traffic flow and cut down on the emission of carbon dioxide from cars. Second, government have more money to invest in transport infrastructure. It makes journeys by road and rail can be more convenient than driving their own cars. Drunk people can go home without posing a threat to others on streets. For example, many large cities, such as Hong Kong, have had a light rail transit system for many years.

In conclusion, it seems to me that heavy tax on private vehicles has more benefits than problems.
