Need help with this sentence~ please
"My background is civil engineering, having retired from the Texas Dept. of Transportation in 1996, after 33 years in that profession, and I'm sort of familiar with the military, having spent 3 years in the United States Army prior to that."
I'm wondering what other words I can use to replace "having retired" and "having spent". I guess "having spent" can be replace by "since I have spent". As for "having retired", I'm not sure what other words I can use instead them.
Any help would be appreicated. Thanks.
