Need Help with the Motivation Letter

Hi everyone

I am applying for the Msc In International Health in Germany, I had written a draft of motivation letter and sharing it with you all. I need suggestion in making motivation letter more meaningful and compact.

On a windy day I was in St. John Hospital, Guwahati India for my Dental Check-up, a case of road traffic accident rushed into the Hospital – patient was a Rickshaw puller with blood oozing from his lower left leg, I instantly realized that it’s a displaced tibia fracture. Under intense excruciating pain he looked at his family members, his wife pulled out from her purse a community health insurance scheme card known as Rashtriya swasthaya Bima Yojana (RSBY) card in hope that her husband will receive quality treatment without engaging the family in financial hardship. To my surprise though the hospital treated the patient but not accepted the RSBY card. I joined National Health Mission, Assam as a consultant to support RSBY scheme in state one week earlier enquired with the hospital authorities, administrator of Hospital Sister Angela told me that Insurance Company had not settled the treatment claims for last one year so now hospital is not accepting RSBY card.

This incident left me skeptical about the relevance of community health Insurance in India, as I investigated more on the issue I found that most the Private hospitals in State of Assam have similar issue of non-payment of claims by the Insurance company. Rashtriya Swastha Bima Yojana in Assam lacks grievance redressal committee nor there any coordination between hospitals and national health Mission. To counter this problem of coordination I devised a cost effective intervention by creating a Whatspp group consisting members of private hospital, Insurance Company and state nodal agency (SNA), responsible for effective implementation of RSBY in the State of Assam. The Group acts as a platform for hospitals to share their grievances with the government officials. This was my first experience on how the lack of transparency, co-ordination and accountability prevent the program to attain its goal of providing Universal health coverage through health Insurance. Last month State of Assam and most part of north east witnessed natural disaster in the form of heavy flood, as I participated in the relief work I realized the true importance of health insurance under extreme conditions. These incidences motivated me to apply for the Msc in International Health from the Heidelburg University.

What draws me the most to Msc in International health is its curriculum which is especially designed focusing on the issue of poverty related health problems in low and middle income countries. It provides a unique opportunity to learn, travel and practically implement the skills learned during the course in to the practical field. The modules of the MscIH is quite diversified that focuses on developing skills and competencies for the improvement of healthcare in developing nations. All the modules are excellent along with the elective modules but the health economic and policy module presents me unique opportunity to interact with Prof. Muller, as she is also Principal Investigator of the research team which is engaged in research to study impact of RSBY in India. It will be a great opportunity for me to share my personal view on RSBY and attend her lectures.

India had a vision for the Universal health coverage to provide quality care to its citizen along with financial protection. A high level expert group was constituted in 2010 by planning commission with a mandate of developing a framework for providing accessible and affordable health services to its citizen. Though India is willing to implement Universal health coverage, it need technical support from the countries who are pioneered in social health Insurance. Germany being the first country to implement nationwide health Insurance in 1883, covering 88% of its population right now. There is no better place for me than Germany to learn the skills and concepts from the pioneers of health Insurance and implement it in my country which is in dire need of Universal Health Coverage. Ultimately I intend to assist Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW) to build a sustainable Universal health coverage scheme.

I am hardworking, confident and always search for opportunities to enhance my skills and knowledge. I have a keen interest in Global health issue and Universal health coverage, I always engage myself with the online courses available through massive open online courses (MOOC) offered by different universities through websites like coursera, procurementlearning, and disaster ready. In last two years I had collected five e-certificate. Apart from my academic activities I am task master at work I had coordinated between high level Government authorities of State Government of Assam and Ministry of Health & Family Welfare on the agenda to fresh enrolment of RSBY beneficiaries. Finally State of Assam got the permission for new enrolments of RSBY beneficiaries after 5 years.

I had experience of diversified India as I worked in five different states in different program with different people in multicultural team. I witnessed the public health problems at the grass root level and also worked with state government officials to rectify issues. I was also engaged with the mobile health program which was first program to promote health services and Management. I wish share my ideas and innovations taking place in different state of India with other participants and lecturers.

I also had experience of social determinants of health that are responsible for the prevalence of hygiene and nutrition related disorder that increases the disease burden among the most vulnerable population of India.
