Need help with the correct use of comma

Hi.

I wanted to know if all three sentences are correct in terms of using comma?

1- Elisha Otis invented the safety elevator and first showed it to the public in 1853.
2-Elisha Otis invented the safety elevator, and he first showed it to the public in 1853.
3-Elisha Otis invented the safety elevator, and he first showed his elevator to the public in 1853.

Thanks.But I need more explanation and the reason.

I found the first sentence in a book, so it is correct for sure! The rest were modified by myself. yet the general rule isn't clear to me.

The general rule is that you separate coordinate independent clauses with a comma before the conjunction.

#1 is one clause with subject "Otis" and a compound predicate "invented and showed." So no comma.

#2 and #3 have two independent clauses each. "Otis invented" and "he showed." So a comma before the "and."
