Need help with "sometimes".

Can someone help me with the phrase?

I need to write that someone was doing sth in the past from time to time. I don't know which tense I should use.

"When he was little, she sometimes filled the iron tub with water and cleaned him." or "She sometimes has been filling the iron tub with water and cleaning him"? Or maybe some other tense?
