Need help with Simple past tense

Q: Did you eat the cake?
A: I have eaten the cake already.

The question above is in Simple past tense and the answer is in Present perfect tense.

Should the answer be in Present perfect tense or in Simple past tense?

Everyone will know what you mean by "I have eaten the cake already", but it isn't the best choice. I would choose simple past.
