Discuss the role of the generalist social worker vs. the specialist social worker.
I believe the differences between the generalist and specialist social worker is a very important factor in helping one decide which area of social work they would like to learn more of. For instance, the generalist social worker plays many roles such as, an enabler, negotiator, and supporter. But the most important role they play is the role of a problem solver. The knowledge of more than one specialty means a more generalized ability to address an issue. The generalist can take on problems that are of a larger scale, and complexity than those addressed by specialists. A generalist will make sure he helps the client address all his needs and if he’s unable to help with certain matters he will inform them on what steps to take or direct them to someone who will be able to help them. On the other hand, a specialist can only offer help in his field of expertise. Meaning that the scale, and complexity of the problems specialists attempt to solve are bounded by their specialties. . If not, they are out of their field and perhaps out of their league. A This is not to say that specialists are not problem solvers, too, because they are. In chapter 5 they talk about what the differences are in “Basic” or Generalist position Vs The Specialized position and schooling. The generalist takes basic course to earn a bachelors degree that cover all aspects of social work. A specialist will specialize in a certain area the appeals to them and they will earn their masters degree in that particular area . For example, if a generalist had a client who needed help with drug rehabilitation or any other problem they were unable to help them with they would refer them to a specialists in that field who would be able to better assist them. So basically both generalists and specialists share the same common goals but different areas of expertise.
