Dear Dr Gavin Lear
I am writing to apply for the PhD studentship,Microbial Biodiversity and Biogeography organized by the Soil and Physical Sciences Dept, Lincoln University.
The reason I have submitted my application for your consideration is that, I regard myself as a highly motivated and capable individual who is actively seeking opportunities to develop a professional career in this field as well as build upon my existing knowledge and experience base.
I graduated B.Sc. (Hon) Environmental Geoscience in 2009 from the University of ****** During my degree I became particularly interested in microbiology and environmental sustainability, its principles and associated tools that allow the evaluation of the potential outcome of future impact on the environment.
During my final year geoscience project work I gained valuable knowledge and experience in hydrological modelling. In this study the modelling software of GeoSys/Rock flow version 4.5.06(WW) Open Source was applied to a previously collected data set. The aim of the study was to interpret the interactions between fresh and seawater on highly populated coastal areas of Israel. This exercise required learning new skills quickly and efficiently related to both field surveys and bench studies. I also developed experience in presenting data in both written and oral form.
I have developed a passion for environmental science theory and laboratory and other practical work. Both of these roles require excellent time management and organisational skills, as well as the ability to work to tight deadlines and under pressure.
While studying towards my undergraduate degree, I worked for the Science Advice for Scottish Agriculture (SASA Edinburgh, Scotland), under the supervision ******(Plant Health section) and ********** (Diagnostic and Molecular Biology section). As an assistant plant pathologist, I gained valuable knowledge of several laboratory techniques and applications in the diagnosis and preparation of a variety of plant samples for further research and disease testing. I have a good working knowledge in molecular biology diagnostic (PCR) and virus diagnostic techniques (ELISA).
Thank you very much for taking the time to consider my application. Please see my CV for further details. I am able to start this PhD on the advertised starting date.
Yours sincerely,
