hey all i need help with my oral. I'm in my final year of school and the topic is "is Steve Irwin a suitable candidate for australian of the year?" Any help would be much appreciated regards  tris

First you need to tell us who Steve Irwin is. Then you need to help us understand what the qualifications are for someone in the running for Australian of the Year. You might then want to tell us what who else is in the running and make whatever comparisons are necessary in order to persuade me and your other readers (in your final paragraph) why or why not Steve Irwin should be Australian of the Year.

Depending on the length required for this paper, you would need at least four paragraphs--maybe more if the paper is to be several pages.

Oops! I see that you have asked for help with an oral examination rather than a written paper. It really doen't matter, however. Writing it out will help you organize your thoughts.

hey all i started this topic

well Steve Irwin is the crocodile man he handles crocodiles and one day a a zoo in queensland a state of australia he was doing a demo and he did a stunt with his baby bob. he got bob (hes like 12 months old or something) to stand relly close (he was holding him) and Steve through a piece of meat to him (the crocodile) and then there was all this controversy over what he had done. the meda was saying that he was setting a bad example, that bob should be taken away from him and that he ruined any chance of becoming australian of the year.

i need some pointers on what i could write about

the oral only needs to go for 5-8 minutes so roughly 1200-1500 words

Tris, making an oral presentation is an interesting and difficult task. My experience with it has shown that the presentation is good if

a) you know what you are talking about
b) you are sincerely interested in the subject
c) you have a brief plan in your head
d) you had had a couple of rehearsals

If I were you I wouldn't try to get a written speech - it's a politicians' style, not high school students'. I'd inquire about some facts: who was the Australian of the year within the last few years, what had Steve Irwin done to be eligible for the title; what are flaws in his reputation preventing him from getting it. After all, I would certainly decide for myself about the answer to the question.

Then I'd sketch a plan of the speech, say "How to persuade the listener that Steve Irwin is not the right person for the Australian of the year" (if you decide that he's not). Maybe you'd want to start with describing what Australian of the year title is (with examples of the last years), then move to Steve Irwin, emphasise the main point - the accident with the baby bob (to tell the truth, I didn't quite get from your words what awful had happened with the bob) which doesn't allow Steve to stand in the row with the previous Australians of the year.

Finally, I'd try to present the speech to my friend/mother/dog/mirror and check the time. Then analyse it, take out what you don't want to say again, add what you had missed, and repeat the rehearsal.

P.S.: maybe your speech will be about things absolutely different from what I suggested, but anyway I encourage you to search for information - about Steve, about Austr. of the year, maybe even about crocodiles! - in order to get competent and interested in the subject, to gain some knowledge and emotional perception of it.

Incredibly good strategies! What could I do to persuade someone to talk to me on the phone?I am more interested in an everyday conversation. Talking on the telephone or to an answering machine is one of the most difficult tasks when you are learning a foreign language. You need lots of courage to do that!

p.s. nothiung happened to bob steve was feeding to croc with one arm and holding bob with the other. steve has been taming/playing with crocs for a majority of his life.
