Need help with english.

Which is correct and why:

1) He went to a music festival so that he can make friends.

2) He went to a music festival so that he could make friends.

1) He told me that he will help me.

2) He told me that he would help me.

I am beginning my story telling journey, and I don't know if I'm supposed to write the present tense of a verb, or the past tense of a verb in certain sentences. However, I generally use past tense verbs to tell my story.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank You.
