Need help with Double Genetive

We all know the inportance of Double genetive in sentences like "It is a picture of my father's" Which eliminates the ambiguity that the some sentence with no double genetive can form. "It is the picture of my father."

But should we use this construction everywhere since the picture is an inanimate object and could be viewed as in someone's possession. But what about sentences like "He is a friend of my father's". Should we use "father's or father".

Please help we with this problem.
