Need help with complicated sentence

Please, help me to correct this sentence. It's a little bit complicated for me....

Only once for more than twenty years of boys' participation in the tournament, have they played against the French team. It was Toulouse Football Club.

Thanks

It seems correct but not very readable. I suggest: In over 20 years of competing in the tournament, the boys played the French team (Toulouse Football Club) only once.

Do you not think it should be "a French team"?

(I assume that "boys" is used colloquially since they could not literally have been boys for twenty years.)

Yes I guessed that on boys. I think this is part of a much larger text. It should be a French team if there is more than one playing in the tournament. From the original text I read it that there was only one French team so I keep the. Worth pointing out to the OP that I have interpreted it that way.
