need help with a passage in Book X of The Republic by Plato
I am trying to translate book X (part I: Plato on Poetry), The Recompense of Life, of The Republic written by Plato, into my mother language, and not able to understand the following passage:
"God, whether from choice or form necessity, made one bed in nature and one only; two or more such ideal beds neither ever have been nor ever will be made by God.
"Why is that?
"Because even if He had made but two, a third would still appear behind them which both of them would have for their idea, and that would be the ideal bed and not the two others."
'But' = only?
'Which' in the last sentence (because...two others) replaces for what? and what does the sentence means???
Please help me!
Thank you very much.
