Need help with a grammar question

This has been bugging me for awhile. I'm trying to write a story in the past tense, but sometimes I get my tenses confused.

Can someone tell me the difference between:

I just realized I've hardly touched the book

and

I just realize I hardly touched the book.

When writing a story in the past tense, when do you use has/had/have.

Thanks!

I realized I had hardly touched the book. You're in the past, and referring to something further back in the past, so use the past perfect.

  • I realized I had hardly touched the book.
  • You're in the past, and referring to something further back in the past, so use the past perfect.

With "just" I'd be more likely to use the first version.
Your original question was telling a story in the past, though, wasn't it? This is just a new question?
