Need help to understand parts of sentences

Hi,

I saw the following sentences in my grammar text book:

1. In law, the term bond refers to an agreement that guarantees payment if a specified action or event fails to take place.

2 Alan Shepard Jr., born in New Hampshire and educated in Naval Academy, became the first American to enter the space when he travelled to an altitude of 180 kilometers in a sub-orbital flight.

My book says that the word place in the first sentence is a common noun. Is that correct?

How about the word flight in second sentence? Is it a common noun?

Thanks,
Richards Peter.
