Need help revising this sentence

"My conclusion is that I often tried to magnify the time span of something that is already limited. For example, if my mom called at 3 p.m. to tell me to wash my cloth and that she will be back from work at 9 p.m., I would probably only start doing the chore at 8 p.m. and by the end just manages to slip by."

I know there there is a lot of grammar problem in that sentence so can somebody help me revise it?

Something like: I often extend the time span of something that is limited. For example, if my mom called at 3 pm to tell me to wash my clothes and that she would be back from work at 9 pm, I would probably start the chore only at 8 pm and barely finish in time .
