Need help. Reported Speech.

Hi teachers,

Information to consider:

The old lady asked him if he had knocked.

Would you correct me if I am mistaken?

The reported sentence above has two clauses, 'The old lady asked him' and 'he had knocked'.

They are connected by the pronoun 'if'.

Can I include 'if' and say the second class is 'if he had knocked'?

Thanks in advance
