need help on the following

The banks would only grant credits unless the borrowers have property as collateral.

Hi,
May I know if the above sentence is grammatically correct? I would like to say that property is a must for borrowers to borrow from banks. Is the use of unless correct in this sentence? Thank you very much.

There seem to be semantic issues with your sentence, particularly on when and how to use "only", "when " , and " unless" correctly. By the way, banks approve loans and credit card companys approve credit. Your sentence seemed to be mixed up.
