Need help in ESL writing exercise: Famous Landmarks

Could you please help correct this writing exercise by an ESL student?

During my last vacation I was in Italy. The Colosseum is a famous landmark of this country. This bilding is very ancient. It's so unusual to be in the place where thousands of people looked violent fighting for life. It's so large. I thought that it's much smaller. Basides I was in very beautiful cities of this country as Rome, Milan and Turin and such as looked them landmarks.
