I haven't been able to understand clearly what Freud means by the two sentences (red and blue). Could you please rephrase them?

- “To take up attitude” might be a literal translation from the German, but it is not an expression used in English.
- I assume he’s trying to say something like you can’t ignore these problems, you have to face them and take a position on them.
