Need help for a sentence.

Hi teachers,

Do I need the bold article 'the' for the explanation or it is unnecessary?

To form the simple past questions we need the auxiliary verb did, and the principal verb in the simple form.

Infomation to consider: Of course there exceptions to this rule which are already explained.

Thanks in advance

'The' is optional in the last instance but should not be used in the first instance: To form simple past questions , we need the auxiliary verb 'did' and the principal verb in (the) dictionary or infinitive form. The term 'simple form' is not right here, since 'eats' is also the simple form of 'eat'.

Mister Micawber,

Aren't they infinitive forms, to read, to have, to eat, etc.?

Aren't they simple forms, read, have, eat.?

I found in a book this explanation:

The Simple present negative

Subject + do/does + not + simple form of the main verb.

is it wrong?

Mister Micawber,

On this web they say it has a variety of other names as well, including simple form, root, and of course basic form.

is it wrong?-- This is right. Notice that the simple present includes 'does'. The simple present affirmative uses the simple form, too: go/goes, eat/eats. If you ask your student to use 'the simple form', the student may use 'does/goes'.

Mister MicawberBut not 'present form', which can include '-s' form.
Ok Mister Micawber. Thank you for your explanation, but I'm not using 'present form' I'm using 'simple form' which if I'm not mistaken is the same as 'base form' of the verb, isn't it?

Not at all! Went is also simple form (past simple).

Mister Micawber,

Thank you so much for all your replies. I'll use 'base form' or 'simple form of the main verb'. The last one is also possible, isn't it?
