Need HELP finding the function of a word.

In the sentence:

Even if you wrote on a scratch pad and threw the paper away when you had finished writing, your grasp of the book would be surer.

I am concerned with the word grasp. What function is it performing in the sentence (i.e. subject, direct object, indirect object, nominative, etc)

Also, how can I figure it out for myself in the future?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

Hi, It's a noun, and the subject of the main clause. Consider a similar but simpler example. eg If the phone rang, the secretary would answer it.
