Hi, I'm not completely sure what kind of help you need. "measured in four foot chords along an arc equal to the height of each gate" An 'arc' is a curve, often part of the circumference of a circle. A 'chord' is defined in my dictionary as 'a straight line joining the extremities of an arc'.
