Need for comma?

Hi, I would appreciate if someone can answer my doubts listed below.

1. Which of the following sentence is correct (or none at all) ?

(a) The sentence is, "This is a beautiful day.".

(b) The sentence is "This is a beautiful day.".

(c) The sentence is "This is a beautiful day".

2. Which of the following is correct ?

(a) The word is, "excellent".

(b) The word is "excellent".

The sentence is, "This is a beautiful day." (There is a trend to omit the comma, however.)


2.(b) The word is "excellent". (British editors will still put the period inside the quotation mark.)

Thanks! Does it mean that it is perfectly alright to leave out the commas in both case ?

My daughter's teacher taught them to use comma for these situations:

1. The sentence is, "Quote sentence."

2. The word is, "quote".

3. The phrase is, "quote phrase".

We are confused when the comma is needed.

'Perfectly all right'? Probably not. Some teachers and editors will still insist upon it, but the comma is falling out of fashion.
