NEED EXTREME HELP PICKING RIGHT WORD FOR SENTENCES

Could you please tell me how to properly say these sentences. Which word you would use or how you would rephrase it?

1 That's what the hole at the top of the sink is meant/made for; so that the sink/water doesn't overflow.

2 I can smell it through/across the door.

3 Don't be so messed up with/towards him. He's been kind to you.

4 Don't complicate things for yourself./Don't make things difficult on/for yourself.

5 I'm done with/I've done everything except for the dishes.

6 It's/Those are not my teeth so I don't care if she's in pain.

7 It'll never be like before between us/the way it was before between us.

8 Would it make a difference if the light was/were on or not?

9 I hurt my back trying to get something off the shelf.

7) This sentence is really awkward..I get what you're trying to say, but neither of your options really make that much sense. If you have to choose one of them I'd choose the second one.

8) Would it make a difference if the light was on or not?

Each of the sentences you supply would be vastly improved if you took an English grammar class, even if it were at the high school level. A good teacher of grammar would include usage and insist you read books (anything that interests you, but OK'd by the teacher for writing competence first).

Perhaps this might help now:

Sentence #9... this is casual and not technically inaccurate as stated. However, compare that with, "I wrenched my back when I tried to reach the top shelf."

Sentence #8 requires the subjunctive case in an "if" clause: "Would it make a difference whether the light were on or off?" Specificity is most often more desireable also. "On or not..." implies "off" but implies other choices like, perhaps, on the table. Or light even from a different source, such as a flashlight.

Sentence #7 is so garbled you have a tough job. A future suggestion? Comparing to the present? or Comparing to the past? The words now imply all of that. "What will happen now between you and me will be a new experience for us."

Say what you mean (in fewer words if you can) and mean what you saw.

Sentence #6 should not be said under any circumstances. If the words are a response to someone else, just change the subject.

Sentence #5 ... curious the first three words are out of nowhere. The sentence after "/" stands correctly. You don't need the "for"... after the word "except." It's understood in the context.

Sentence #4... each of the suggestions are all right. Either "on" yourself, or "for" yourself is correct grammar.

Sentence #3... the problem is using the word "messed" ... it may be slang in its usage but it is incongruous with the second sentence. Get rid of "messed." That will determine whether "with" (interaction) or "toward" (single targeting action) should be used.

Sentence #2... not "across." Doesn't make sense. But the sentence is awkward the way "smell" is used. "I can detect the odor even though the closed door." Is that what your are trying to say? Or, is it the door itself that smells? Clarifying is a challenge for you. Is it the smell of the door itself, like new wood? Or did something smelly get spattered on the door?

Sentence #1... "That is an overflow entrance to a pipe there at the top of the basin."
