Need explanation please

Hi everybody,

#1 I hadn't thought that Kitty were a clever writter.

#2 I haven't thought that Kitty is a clever writter.

Could you please explain me at what situation we use the above sentences?

Thank you

Hi Goat! Mmm, I think the fist one makes sense. But I'd rather use "was" after Kitty.

Hi Goat!

Mmm, I think the fist one makes sense. But I'd rather use "was" after Kitty. I guess "were" can be use with third person and first person singular in imaginary situations using the conditionals (type 2), something like this:

"If I were you, I'd..."

"They'd ... if she were here"

So, this is not that case. Thus, we may say:

"I hadn't thought Kitt

Hi,

Could you please change the following into indirect sentence?

She said, "I hadn't thought kitty was a clever writer".

INDIRECT: "She said she hadn't thought Kitty was a clever writer".

The indirect structure for a direct Past Perfect structure is... Past Perfect.

Nevertheless, you may change the pronouns in the indirect sentence.

I wouldn't say: "She said she hadn't thought Kitty had been a clever writer."

That doesn't sound as natural English.

Cheers,

RENAN
