need as semi modal and as lexical verb

Hi!
How can we tell if "need" is semi modal or lexical verb?
i.e. You have to need to do it.
Is need here a lexical verb or semi modal? Why?

Anonymous need to do it It's a lexical verb there. Modal need takes a bare infinitival complement ( You needn't worry ), whereas lexical need takes a to -infinitival.
