Need articles here?

Hi. Please tell me if the ones in parentheses are needed or not. As for the word "encouragement" in the second example sentence, I was trying to come up with an appropriate uncountable noun, and I'm not sure it is one.

1. Instead of using (the?) water from the first cup, he used (the?) water from the second cup.
2. It offers a free pen, (a?) notepad, and encouragement.
