Need an explanation

Hi teachers

The terrorist group is known ---- an extensive supply of weapons.

A) to have
B) having
C) having had
D) to be having
E) have had

What could be the correct answer here and why? I'm confused. Is there any formulas to solve these kinsds of questions? Thank you.

I guess that first of all you need to recognise the pattern "be known/believed/thought/said/etc. to (do something)". This tells you that it must be (A) or (D).

  • To distinguish between those, you need to know that "have", in the sense of "possess", is not used in the continuous tenses (it may be used in the continuous tenses in other meanings).
