Need a word: "negligence of duty"??

Hi

If someone is not doing their duty (in an office, etc) the way they should be and has been cutting corners, can we use the word "negligence" to talk about an action like this?

He was fired for negligence of duty.
He was given a warning letter for negligence of duty.

Or are there more appropriate words?

Thanks,

Tom

I'm trying to think of a more common term, but for now I think you're going for "dereliction of duty". This type of description is usually used in military or police organizations.

"Negligence" is usually used as a legal term to describe creating a dangerous situation. Leaving dangerous chemicals out, or creating a fire hazard would be considered negligence.
