Need a help to improve my writing

Statement of Teaching Experience and Philosophy

I was born in a pedagogic family in which my father is the president of a high school and my mother is a language teacher. However, I kept in my mind that I should not follow them because of the main difficulty and poverty of my family related to my parents’ job. There were many people who had to change their jobs, but my parents did not. They were very happy when I was the best student at the ..., where I aimed at a programmer for my future. In the end, when I graduate B.Sc, it seemed that the passion for teaching was already in my blood when I said “Yes” with the offer from the dean in the Information Technology department without any reluctance. I was eager to begin as a TA in some basic networking courses and I was able to work on the Windows, Linux, and Cisco network systems in my university. For instance, in one of the semesters in the Intermediate network course, I constructed homework and project assignments where students were asked to build and configure a private VLAN for a company and perform an evaluation of the network performance. Furthermore, I acquired classroom management skills from small to large classes. I worked hard and greatly enjoyed the increased number of students. After one year, I was delegated as a lecturer for some principles courses of networking, the instructor, and help for some intermediate courses in the college.

This was a beautiful beginning but I gradually recognized that I needed to enrich my knowledge. Thus, it motivated me to get the M.Sc. program at the University of Science in .... I graduated M.Sc in xxx and I had many opportunities to work closely with many famous professors in my country. One of them is Prof.xxx, who had a vital influence on me until now. He told me that students could not remember everything in the class, hence, the best way to give a good lesson is to make it like a story to curious them. He was a conservative person to refuse teaching with a PowerPoint since he mentioned that many students only followed the slide as watching TV then forgot most of them. The PowerPoint style is only good if a teacher has a big investigation. Moreover, he stimulated us reading textbooks and taught us how to use a textbook efficiently. Thanks to him, such teaching experiences help me and go with me until now with plenty of achievements.

The academic environment made me eager to go deeper into research. I successfully passed the interview to join the networking lab of Prof. xxx to complete my Ph.D. I spent 4 years in xxx where I studied virtual networking technologies in wireless communication and data center core networks with many hot technologies used widely in the current Internet network. My Ph.D. thesis specifically focused on resource allocation in data center networks in order to answer how to reduce the operational cost in data centers while improving the system performance. My academic network has been opened by co-working, collaborating, and assisting many famous professors in xxx and xxx who visited my university (e.g., Prof. xxx). They helped me to form my research interest which is applying optimization methodologies into cutting-edge networking applications where I have focused more on mathematics such as game, probability, and optimization theories, and the strong foundation in basic math concepts and intuition in order to improve their analytical and quantitative skills. I emphasized students’ abilities and inspiring their confidence to help them succeed in these courses. I helped them to design their projects, summarized learning contents for the class progress and students as their “second chance” of learning.

In xxx, I accepted a postdoctoral scholar position in xxx where I have been continuing my research and studying new technologies in IoT networks. My current research involves the study of the machine learning mechanisms applying smart homes, and smart cities, allowing me to build upon my past work on the IoT area. Apart from the regular research duties, I have also trained new masters and Ph.D. students for my lab on behalf of my supervisors. I strive to enrich my teaching and research skills; and thus, increase the value of the training courses. I redesigned specific topics suitable for group students in each project such as: applying convex optimization in network flow routing, applying game theory in xxx, optimizing WIFI network by machine learning approaches. I first introduced some theories which can easily find in textbooks, then, challenged them into practical difficult scenarios, yet stimulated them for novel ideas. I used to break them into small group discussions in the same problem solving, by allowing teamwork, but each participant had to present their ideas and contributions. In that way, I found that many lab members can learn together and rapidly understand the mathematical theory as well as recognize their weaknesses. As a result, my lab members and I have many publications in high-level conferences and journals, such as xxx.

I always challenge myself to be a professor in the future so that I never satisfy myself in teaching and research. In summary, “learning-by-doing” can, in one word, summarize my teaching philosophy. I strongly believe that making students remember a lesson is important but applying that story into practice is more important and that is also the final duty of a professor.
