Need

Hello,

Are there some particular rules of using the verb "need" ? I mean, is there any particular situation where I must use it as an auxiliary verb or main verb?

Thank you in advance.

No, I don't believe so. The use as a main verb is becoming more usual, but the meanings are the same. No doubt there also exist collocations in which only one will work, as in 'This floor needs cleaning', for instance.

  • Also, you may be aware that the auxilary appears only in negative and interrogative form.
