Need

Good evening, everyone!

What is the different between need to do and need doing?

I've heard people saying: "Mystery needs solving". Can i say "Mystery needs to be solved" ?

Thanks and happy First Moon Night!

Yes, you can. I don't see any significant difference in meaning, at least here. I have a feeling that BrE uses the participle more, while AmE leans toward the infinitive.
