Neck-to-neck competiton

Playback singer Kunal Ganjawala, who was among the judging panel of the TV show, told IANS: 'Our duty was to bring the right contestants to fight it out at the finale and I am happy we were able to do so. It was a neck-to-neck competition and the results entirely depended on public voting.

Could you please explain to me what "neck-to-neck" means here?
