he lives on a farm not far away from the castle. Why I can't say He lives on a farm nearby to the castle ?

Because 'nearby' is an adverb. These are your choices:

He lives on a farm near the castle.
He lives on a farm not far from the castle

Nearby can also be an adjective: He lives on a nearby farm.

The combination 'nearby to (something)' is not used in English. Use 'near (something)' instead.

You can substitute 'near' for 'not far (away) from', however.

[Not far from / Near] the intersection there is a gas station.
