Hi guys,

To my mind, 'facing' makes extinction sound a little bit more inevitable than 'near'.

In this context, I'd say 'the species is', not 'the species are'.

Best wishes, Clive

I agree. It should be 'species is'.

Just to clarify: "species" is the plural of "species", so e.g. "both species are facing extinction" would be ok.

species is both the singular and plural form: Pandas are an endangered species. There are many species of trees.
