We say "We are nearing winter."

I just saw the meaning of 'approach': It is "to come near", and also "to make advances to".

So, are these correct?
We are approaching winter. (We are making advances to winter)
Winter is approaching. (Winter is coming near)
And, as for using winter as subject, it is personified here. Am I right?
