Vocabulary

navigator

Some products use the name navigator.

For instance, Netscape Navigator (a browser), Lincoln Navigator (a car).

Does the name mean anything to you? -----> Navigator

Thanks,

To me it means someone/thing that finds the right way! If you are driving and someone else is map reading and telling you where to go, they are the navigator. Word thesaurus defines it as 'guide, pilot, direction-finder, route finder (pilot would be in the sense of small boats that guide large ships, not aeroplane pilots).

  • So Navigator is a very good name for both your example products.

Hi Nona,

Thanks for all the answers. I appreciate it.

I think it bothers me when I heard the use of 'Navigator', which didn't quite match what the definiton you wrote.

A car or browser is simply a tool. They don't guide you to somewhere. You are the one who determines where to go, but of course with some of thier(car&browser) help. Do you call you feet or hands 'Navigat

I suppose they choose the name to show that it gets you where you need to go...

Pilot ships work around ports, guiding large ships through busy shipping lanes/shallow waters/through reefs etc. They have local knowledge of conditions.

Hi Nona,

"I suppose they choose the name to show that it gets you where you need to go..."

What does 'gets' mean? ---> carries or brings?

Thanks for the follow-up.

Actually to navigate does not necessarily mean 'to guide', and a navigator is not necessarily 'one who guides'. The first dctionary definition entry for these words appears to be, respectively: to travel, and traveler.

Does that fix the problem you have, meantolearn?

Hi Dave,

The pain has been relieved if 'navigate' simply means to travel rather than to guide. It makes much more sense when you

call a car or browser a navigator.

navigate - to travel by water ( Webster); this is probably the closest definition I can find.

Nowadays, some fancy cars have navigating system built in. That must be a different story to talk
