Navigate

Hi,

1) If I was driving in a car with my dad and we got lost, he'd probably took a map out of the glove compartment and he'd start telling me where to go. Would I then say that 'He was navigating me'? I was wondering if there's a different word I could use.

2) My brother opened the window with such force that he broke it down. (He basically took it off the hinges. Can 'break down' be used or should I go for something like 'break open'?

3)I was shocked by the questions, because I had focused on something else when I had been studying for the exam. (Could I also say 'when I was studying', even though I used past perfect in the previous sentence?)

Thank you!
