Natural?

Hi,

"In the past, I used to think how good it would be if I had everything, not just money but also vast knowledge. As the time passes and I move forward, the short story I once was told is becoming more and more clear. They ask a seemingly simple man if he wants to become the king, he immediately responds with a flat no, and adds to that, there will be no sense of progression after you become the king, as there is not any more advanced state thereafter."

Do you suggest any corrections or improvements? I have some doubts on the type of conditional I used with "used to", I couldn't judge it on my own even with the help of my grammar book.
