What is the main topic of this discussion?

What is the disccussion mainly about?

Volcanic activity happening on planet

Volcanic activity ocuuring on planet

I recall/remember reading in the newspaper about something happening at Reuters, too.

in my opinion in "what is the main topic of this discussion?" the main is not nessecery, "what's the topic of this discussion?" will sufice and sound natural. and cross the meaning that you are intrested to know what its mainly about ...
but to choose i would go for the first one!

occure is used "(especially of accidents and other unexpected events)" (Cambridge Advanced learner dic)
I think if you want to point out on occurance in particulare the occure is a better way to go ... but here since its generall they are happening all over the place
so for this one i go for the first one as well ... (but don't forgte the planet)

i would use remember in this case ... since you don't exactly recall what was it that you read ... and you are remmembering the act of reading, but not recalling what you read!
(i would put it in this for: I too, remember reading about something happening at Reuters in the news paper.)
