Hi

I must respectfully disagree with Clive

Another rule would be to use capitals if a formal national symbol is directly preceded by 'the'; and use lower case otherwise

The Singapore national website in fact does this (and it seems natural to me)..

Hi

I agree that different people are entitled to do it differently

Just to clarify: I would only capitalise the 'The' if it's at the beginning of the sentence; otherwise, it is the National Anthem

Dear Vincent

I would say that if a nation or state recognises a song as their official song then you should use capitals

A school song, though important, would not be capitalised

I cannot tell from your context whether the first song is recognised by a nation or a state. But, either way, I would use capitals..

- The assembly began with the singing of the Nation

I am getting really confused whether or not it should be capitalized. Some people from other websites are saying it is not necessary to capitalize "national anthem" since it is not the actual name of the song and that it is just a regular noun.

Nothing to worry about. I have been confused all my life with similar things. The fascination of English lies in the very fact that there is no authority that says what is right and what is wrong.
