"Nascent" has a more specific meaning than "early" (it literally refers to something that's just been born). When you're talking about something in its nascent period, you're highlighting it wasn't ready yet, it wasn't fully developed, it was possibly in its very earliest stages. "Early" doesn't necessarily carry all of those connotations by itself (though of course it can be used to convey all of them).
