"I am an Indian who works in The Drug Control and Administration Ministry of Qatar," I said as sternly and matter-of-factly as one could when being interrogated by two customs officers and a local policeman. "Then, Sir, you must be knowing all the trade regulations regarding the subject," the taller customs officer enquired. "Absolutely." "Well, how is it that we find white Heroin packets in your luggage?" "I will not change my statement; a stranger, Mr. Chucks, had offered me money, when I was in distress, to deliver a parcel that he had apparently 'forgotten' about, to the prescribed address in Qatar." I showed him the scribbling like I had twice before. Yup, all of it just went wrong. I was returning from India after settling the income-tax issue that had been bothering me lately. The income-tax department charged me my two months' salary as penalty when I had given the year's advance already. To make matters worse, this came at a time when I had taken a home loan. But of course, a stranger had to drop in front of me , offering me USD 20,000 to deliver a scanned-parcel to someone. On top of all this, that parcel had to contain a 'strictly prohibited drug' and I had to be working under ministry controlling the same. It all just had to happen. "Mr., you could be sued big time," the inspector spoke for the first time," so better tell us all you know about that Chucks fellow." "He was travelling from BOK to Hong-Kong via Delhi in Fly-The-World airlines. He had another black-suited man accompanying him. I checked his name on the boarding-pass too. Jones, it said. Mr. Chucks was in a grey suit. He gave me that business card." I pointed to a card in my wallet that lay on the table. The shorter customs officer who had been silent so far dialled to some internal number and whispered to the receiver. Minutes later he told me to go, 'under house custody, of course.' It would be two weeks till I would be headache-free again. Two weeks till I read the Newspaper with the headlines -"Two smugglers caught, Used innocent as decoy."
