Narrative in past

Hi! Can somebody please help me with my problem? I have a story which happens in the past. So I have a sentence -

"I decided that it is time to go to bed."

or

"I decided that it was time to go to bed."

Which option is the correct one? Maybe they both are correct? When story happens in the past should I always use past tense?
