Narrative Function

Thanks in advance for help with this. I'm trying to decide if the term "narrative function" or "literary function" is better for my writing. I'm describing a speech that within the context of the work serves as a turning point. Would I say that the narrative function of this speech is to signal a change in the direction of the story? Am I using that correctly?
