Matthew if the person is Catholic, Mathew is the person is Protestant. That's the difference in the spelling, and I should know, being Irsh Catholic.

Matthew M.

The problem is with the above answer is that my name is spelled Mathew and I am Catholic and yet all my friends that are Protestant spell it with two "t"s so who is correct? I don't have the correct answer just an opposite observation.

I have known several Matthews, Roman Catholic and Protestant. I have known only one Mathew, and he was an atheist.

I am not an athiest and I have a Nephew who's name is spelled Matthew. He has a mother who will soon be a Christian and a father who is a Christian. He is a mix of Irish and English ( Mother) and German, Swedish, Scottish and English (Father). He is planning to marry a woman who is Mexican.

Wikipedia thinks Mathew is a surname and Google thinks it's a spelling mistake; if in doubt always go with two Ts. Never abbreviate it to Mat (= doormat) or Matt (= dull paint).

Most of the Matthews I have know have been Matt to their friends. We no more think of dull paint when we see/hear this than we think of male cats when we meet a Thomas who is called Tom.
