Named vs. called again

There was a segment of "60 Minutes" tonight devoted to Tim Howard, the Manchester United keeper. In it a Brit sports writer was speaking of a previous United keeper and he said the fellow "was called" X instead of "was named", or "his name was".

I have a foot in both camps, and tend to accept that it's close enough to be a tie. But it should be "in Britain" - no
